As one part of the dynamic Mother Daughter Duo, that is Kelly and Justene, and one of the youngest business owners in Gympie Central we asked Kelly to reflect on her journey to date. Kelly gave us an insight into what she most enjoys in her day to day role of working in Nextra Gympie.
Is there a specific event or instance you can think of that has made your day recently?
Every day brings a new opportunity to help someone new at Nextra. We’ve developed so many positive relationships with customers over the last 2 years, and that is so valuable to us. I think the sheer joy of being able to help someone find the perfect gift is such a highlight ofr us.
Can you tell us a little about your experience in the business?
I started with Nextra as a junior at age 14. In the first six years I grew my skills in the industry before I completed university and entering the corporate world. Part of me always missed the retail environment, so to have the option to come back with Mum (Justene) as co-owner less than 12 months of leaving was a bit of a shock! I continue to grow both as a person and as a business owner, learning every day.
Why is the Shop Local Campaign important to you?
We are fortunate to have 10 lovely local community members of all ages employed at Nextra. Supporting local is in the heart of our business in other aspects too. We stock a number of local goods in store and support Gympie United FC & Gympie Crickey. On top of that our Back-to-School season has a truly local standpoint as we support a number of schools and their P&C’s with donations t9o continue to improve our town’s kids’ educational opportunities. When you shop here, you support here.
What do you love about your customers?
I love the relationships that we have as a team developed with our customers. We try to get to know our regulars by their names & their lotto orders! We often have a laugh with our customers, this is a highlight of our day. We love seeing our customers achieving milestones in their life. There was a lady who was 105 years this year, who I really took a shine to; being able to help her with her orders and seeing her out about really made me smile.
What are you most proud of in your time in the business?
It would be how much I have grown personally, professionally, and morally. Nextra has opened my eyes to the world and the people in it, and I feel really privileged to be on this journey. It has taken a huge amount of hard work to get to this point, and I am proud to have chosen this career path for myself so early on. I love seeing what Mum and I have created and the joy it gives our customers day to day.
