For Danielle and Neil, owners of McFarlane’s Gourmet Meats, running the shop is a family affair. Born and raised in Gympie, they’ve returned home to continue a family tradition that spans across three generations.
The business was originally started by Neil’s grandfather 35 years ago. In 2020, Danielle and Neil stepped in, determined to keep the shop going and maintain the strong local ties built over decades.
McFarlane’s is known for its quality offerings, grass-fed beef from Tasmania, free-range chicken, and convenient value-added products for those who work late and need a quick, quality dinner option.
Location is another key part of the story. Danielle and Neil speak about their love for Gympie Central - McFarlane’s is easy to access, and they are appreciative that the support from centre management has been strong. “We wouldn’t go anywhere else,” Danielle says.
Those relationships extend beyond the counter. “You strike up a good relationship with the locals,” Neil adds. “Not through just selling meat, but outside of work as well.”
One memory still stands out for the couple: their first Christmas after taking over the business. “We didn’t know if the customers would come back,” Danielle recalls. “But they did. It was incredible. We shut the doors on Christmas Eve, hugged, cried, and just said - we did it.”
